You’ll need
- DK/light worsted yarn in red, green, white and/or gold
- Crochet hook suitable for your yarn (around 3–4 mm)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- A small polystyrene/plastic bauble or polyester stuffing
- Ribbon or yarn for the hanging loop
1. Make the granny squares
Make 6 small granny squares.
Using your main colour:
- Make a magic ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first treble/double crochet).
- Work 2 trebles into the ring, then chain 2.
- Repeat [3 trebles, chain 2] three more times.
- Slip stitch to join.
You now have a tiny 4-corner granny square.
For the next round, work 3 trebles, chain 2 into each corner space, joining with a slip stitch at the end.
You can change colour between rounds to create a festive pattern.
US terminology: “treble” above = double crochet (dc).
UK terminology: “treble” = tr.
2. Make the six pieces
Make six squares approximately the same size. For a traditional Christmas look, try:
- Red + white
- Green + white
- Red + green
- White + gold
3. Join the squares
Arrange the six squares around your bauble like a little patchwork ball.
Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the edges together, leaving an opening large enough to insert your bauble or stuffing.
If you prefer, you can crochet the edges together with slip stitches.
4. Add the bauble
Place a small plastic/polystyrene bauble inside.
If you don’t have one, gently fill the crochet cover with polyester stuffing until it forms a nice round shape.
Sew the remaining opening closed.
5. Add the hanging loop
Make a chain of about 15–20 stitches, then slip stitch back into the top of the bauble.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Optional finishing
Add a little gold or silver embroidery, tiny buttons, beads, or a crocheted flower/star to the centre of each square.
