Ingredients:
- 4 cups canned baked beans (about 2 cans)
- 6 strips bacon, chopped
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup (optional for extra sweetness)
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (or regular paprika)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt (optional, depending on the saltiness of the beans)
- 1 tbsp butter (optional, for extra richness)
Instructions:
- Cook the Bacon:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside. Leave about 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings in the skillet for the next step.
- Cook the Onion:
- In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook over medium heat until softened and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
- Prepare the Bean Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked bacon, sautéed onion, canned baked beans, brown sugar, maple syrup (if using), ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Stir everything together until well combined.
- Baking:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Transfer the bean mixture to a 9×9-inch baking dish (or similar size) and smooth out the top.
- Dot the top with a little butter (optional but adds extra richness).
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Uncover and Finish Baking:
- After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, uncovered, to allow the sauce to thicken and get a nice golden-brown color on top.
- Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the beans set up a little bit.
- Serve warm with your favorite BBQ dishes, grilled meats, or as a side for a hearty meal.
