These are crocheted Santa Claus Christmas ornaments made with red and white yarn. They’re small, flat Santa faces with a hanging loop, so they’re perfect for a Christmas tree or gift wrapping.
Crochet Santa Face Ornaments
Materials
- Red worsted-weight yarn
- White worsted-weight yarn
- Small amount of black yarn or black safety eyes
- Small amount of red yarn for the nose
- Crochet hook, approximately 4 mm
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Small amount of stuffing
- Optional: small white pom-pom for the hat
Basic Pattern
1. Make the Santa Face
With white yarn, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Crochet 8 single crochets (SC) into the ring. Pull the ring closed.
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around — 16 stitches.
Round 3: 1 SC in the next stitch, 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat around — 24 stitches.
Round 4: 1 SC in the next 2 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch. Repeat around — 32 stitches.
Fasten off and weave in the end.
This creates the round white face and beard base.
2. Add Santa’s Hat
Attach red yarn near the upper-left side of the white circle.
Work several rows of red single crochet across the upper portion of the face, gradually shaping the hat into a curved point.
A simple way is to crochet approximately 12–16 stitches per row, decreasing a stitch at each end as you work upward.
Continue until the hat reaches the desired point.
For the white hat trim, attach white yarn along the bottom edge of the red hat and crochet a row of SC or bobble stitches.
Add a small white pom-pom to the tip.
3. Make the Beard
The beard in the photo has a fluffy, dimensional appearance.
Using white yarn, attach yarn around the lower portion of the face and make clusters of 3–5 double crochet stitches in individual spaces.
Repeat across the lower face.
For an especially fluffy beard, use bobble stitches or several loops of yarn worked into each section.
4. Add the Face
Sew on two small black eyes.
For the nose, make a tiny red pom-pom or crochet a small red ball and sew it onto the center of the face.
Position the nose slightly above the middle of the beard.
5. Add the Hanging Loop
At the top of the hat, attach red yarn.
Chain approximately 25–35 stitches, depending on how long you want the ornament loop.
Slip stitch back into the starting point and fasten off securely.
Finishing
Carefully sew in all loose yarn ends on the back.
If you want the Santa to have a little more dimension, add a very small amount of stuffing behind the white face before finishing.
To get the look in the photo
The key is the textured white beard. Instead of making the beard flat, use bobbles, clusters, or fluffy loop stitches. Keep the face relatively small, make the hat bright red, and use a tiny red pom-pom for the nose.
